MATH & SCIENCE WITH BANANAS

Math & Science with Bananas

Bananas are a very healthy snack.

Why not create a math & science project while preparing a tasty treat.  Here’s how:

Materials:

1 Medium Size Banana per child

Popsicle sticks, Plastic Wrap

Chocolate Syrup, Strawberry Syrup

Sprinkles, Chopped Nuts (Check peanut allergies first)

Paper Towels, Plates & Plastic Knives

Directions:

Always wash hands when preparing food.

Each child peels a medium banana and cut it in half.

Place a Popsicle stick in the bottom of the banana.

Dip the banana in their favorite syrup and roll it in the

nuts or shake sprinkles all over it.

Wrap the banana in plastic wrap and freeze for 11/2 hour.

Repeat this processwith the second half of the banana.

Remove from freezer and enjoy a tasty treat.

Make a graft chart to see how

many children prefer the chocolate covered banana to the strawberry banana.

Paper Bag Painting

NOTE:

 (This project requires adult supervision

and is easy enough to do with all ages.)

Materials:

Glue, Glue Dots

Medium Size Brown Paper Bag

White & Black Construction Paper

Scissors, Stencils, Black Markers

Temper or Oil Based Paints

Baby oil and an Iron

Small containers to hold the paints

Paint Brushes (2 to 3 per child)

Water

Directions:

Cut the bottom fold from the paper bag.  Cut the bag down the middle so it will open wide.

Crumple the entire bag in to a small ball.  Unwrap the paper bag and have an adult to use a warm iron to

press out the wrinkles.  The bag will still have wrinkles in it but it will be ready to use.  In a small

container (Dixie cup) pour a small amount of baby oil.  Using black markers and a stencil have the

children to trace a picture onto the paper bag.  Dip a paint brush into the baby oil and then into the paint

and begin their masterpiece.  Once the painting has dried, place it on a piece of black or white construction

paper and glue it down using the glue dots.  The construction paper serves as your frame.
